BRITISH JUNIOR OPEN
This event is played every 2 years at a golf course close
to the venue of The Open Championships of that year. One boy
and one girl gets to represent their country. The minimum
qualifying is that they should not have attained the age of
16 years as at 01.01 of that year, and that handicap 3 or
better (for boys) and the girl a handicap of 28 or better.
In the event that more than one junior qualifies in each category,
then a further selection is applied and this takes the following
into consideration:
- Kenyan Citizen
- Handicap (the lower the better)
- Support and performances at JGF events
- Etiquette both on and off the golf course
- Availability (both for practice and to travel and play)
Kenya has participated on every occasion since 1998 and our
representatives can be found below.
2010: This year The Junior Open will be played at
Lundin Golf Club, Fife, Scotland form 12th - 14th July 2010.
We will keep you posted on who will represent Kenya at this
event.
2008: The Junior Open was played at Hesketh Golf Club,
Southport England, from 14th to 16th July. A total of 105
golfers from all over the world battled it out for the Gold,
Silver and Bronze trophies. Muthaiga's Jay Patel handicap
5 shot 84, 88 to finish 60th overall. Rachel Chebukati of
Nyali was the girl representative playing off handicap 12.
Rachel shot 87, 89 and lost the Africa trophy on count back.
2006: The Junior Open was played at Heswall Golf Club.
Rachael Chebukati and Ahmed Sayyid Tahir both of Nyali Golf
Club represented Kenya in this event. 47 juniors played in
the Golf category, 27 in the Silver and 19 in the Bronze category.
Out of these 17 juniors were from Africa. In the African Trophy
category, Rachael was placed 5th with a nett of 153 and Tahir
15th with a nett of 166.
2004: The Junior Open was played at Kilmarnock (Barassie)
Golf Club. Kenya was represented by Nelson Mudanyi of Thika
Sports Club and playing off handicap 3. A total of 88 juniors
participated. 39 juniors played in the Gold Category, 32 in
the Silver category and 10 in the Bronze Category and 27 girls.
Out of these, 11 juniors were from Africa. Nelson finished
34th out of 39 in the Gold category with scores of 87, 82,
80. In the category for Africa Region, he was placed 8th out
of 11 with a net score of 163.
2002: The Junior Open was played at Royal Musselburgh
Golf Club. Kenya was represented by Wahome Wambugu of Vet
Lab Sports
Club, aged 15 years and playing off handicap 3 and the girl
representative was Christina Engell Andersen of Muthaiga Golf
Club, aged 14 years and playing off handicap 20.
A total of 85 golfers from 55 countries participated. Wahome
shot scores of 77, 73, 73 and Christian shot scores of 94
and 85 gross. Christina won the African Trophy, donated by
Mastercard.
2000: The Open was played at Crail Golfing Society
Golf Course. Kenya was represented by Bhavnish Chandaria playing
off scratch. A total of 55 juniors participated. Bhavnish
shot scores of 82, 97, 90 for a total gross of 269.
1998: This event was played at Formby Golf Club, Lancashire
from 11th - 17th July, and Ravi Patel was Kenya's representative.
